Impact on Consumer Behavior in the Americas: COVID-19 Survey Snapshot – Week 6



Summary



Research Team is carrying out weekly consumer surveys in 11 countries between 25th March and 31st May 2020, to track consumer sentiment and shopping behavior during the Coronavirus (COVID19) pandemic. The sample size is 500 respondents per country, per week. The two countries in scope for the Americas are Brazil and the USA. Questions are consistent every week, and cover consumer opinions about COVID-19, buying behavior and product choices and impact of the Coronavirus (COVID19) outbreak on consumers’ lifestyle and activities. This report summarizes the key findings from responses in week 6.



Key Highlights



– Both Americans’ and Brazilians’ concern about COVID-19 developed at a similar rate. However, week six has seen these attitudes begin to change. More than half of Brazilians (57%) are extremely concerned about the global COVID-19 outbreak, this is the same number that were concerned in week 5 showing concern has maintained at the same level over the past week. However, concern in the US has dropped significantly by 6%, highlighting that tensions around COVID-19 are beginning to ease.

– In the US, 69% of millennials have had their holidays cancelled or suspended, whilst only 32% of baby boomers have experienced the same. The US has significant travel restrictions in place with a number of full bans in effect. This suggests that a lot more millennials are traveling abroad from the US, as opposed to their baby boomer counterparts.

– There has been a significant drop off in footfall to fast food and casual restaurants in both Brazil and the US. In Brazil, 61% of respondents have stopped going to casual restaurants, whilst in the US 35% have stopped going. The difference in people attending casual restaurants may highlight the difference in attitudes surrounding public environments between the countries.
